Street Dance Styles: Popping and Locking

Popping and locking seem like similar street dance moves however, they are two different dance styles which work brilliantly together. Both dance styles originated differently and have been combined since in many street dance performances.

Lil Beatz help all young children improve their street dance skills and learn all styles, including popping and locking. We offer street dance classes for all children aged 2-6 years old.

What Is Popping?

Popping first came to light in the 1960s, starting with Boogaloo Sam in Fresno California. Whilst there are several different dance moves and origins involving popping, Boogaloo Sam invented “The Boogaloo” dance move. He then taught fellow members of his dance group, The Electric Boogaloos, how to use popping dance moves.

However, there are several other popping dance moves that can be used within street dance. This includes:

  • Animation
  • Dime Stop
  • Gliding
  • Isolation
  • Miming
  • Popping
  • Scarecrow
  • Snaking
  • Strobing
  • Strutting
  • The Robot
  • Ticking
  • Tutting

There are many different inventors when it comes to the original creation of different popping dance moves. Each dance move is completely different but uses elements of popping to create a fantastic dance style. For example, The Boogaloo is a fluid motion which creates the impression of having no bones, with the whole body being loose. Other moves such as gliding show you moving smoothly across the floor, so there is a lot of variation.

What Is Locking?

Locking originated slightly later than popping in the 1970s and was used as a specific style in Los Angeles. Its popularity quickly caught on and whilst the two began as their own unique dance styles, it was not long before they were combined together.

Locking was originally known as Campbellocking, having first been used by Don Campbell. Similar to popping, there are a range of different locking dance moves that can be incorporated into street dance. For example:

  • Alpha
  • Break Down
  • Floor Sweep
  • Funky Guitar
  • Jazz Split
  • Kick
  • Knee Drop
  • Leo Walk
  • Lock
  • Pacing
  • Scoo B Doo
  • Stop and Go
  • The Skeeter Rabbit
  • Up Lock
  • Whichaway
  • Wrist Twirl

Differences Between Popping and Locking

Although both popping and locking are popular within hip hop and commonly used together, they are different dance styles that can be mastered. Popping is forcing your body outwards, similar to an explosion within the body, whereas locking is contracting these body parts.

Both can be done at different intensity levels but locking can also be identified by its distinctive stops. There are many different street dance styles that are combined together within street dance routines. However, popping and locking complement each other to create a fantastic routine and dance style.

Combining Popping and Locking

As popping and locking was around before breakdancing, the two styles were very unique and used separately. During the breaking era, popping and locking began to combine to create funky and fun dance moves.

When used together, the contracting from locking and expansion from popping fit together effortlessly. By learning both dance styles simultaneously, you can master different street dance styles and improve your dancing skills!

History Of Breakdancing

Breakdancing is actually one of the oldest known forms of street dance. Having originated in the Bronx, New York in the 1970s, it was popularised by African Americans and U.S. Latinos. As this is one of the most energetic dance styles, it has continued to grow in popularity, being well known for athletic dance moves compared to many other styles.

One of the first ever groups was called “The Zulu Kings”, formed by Afrika Bambaataa. Since then, many more street dance groups have come to light, with breakdance being a fantastic style to use throughout any routines.

As an earlier form of street dance, breakdance has influenced a range of modern dances as well as being used by many artists who used dance within their acts, such as Michael Jackson’s moonwalking. Breakdancing will now even be an Olympic sport, demonstrating just how much it has grown. Additionally, there have been several street dance films made where breakdance is regularly used.

Breakdance Music

To keep developing your breakdancing, it is important you’re using the right music to keep improving your skills. Hip-hop dance songs are typically ideal for a breakdance routine, however, there are many genres that can be used. Breakdancing music includes:

  • Funk
  • Hip-Hop
  • Jazz
  • Rap
  • Soul

Lil Beatz put together fantastic choreography to make sure all dance routines fit in time perfectly with our music. Not only does this create a great routine but your skills should continue to develop with the help of our dance teachers.

Music is just one part of creating the perfect dance routine involving breakdance. Style, fashion and your own innovation is also important to be an amazing break dancer.

Breakdance Moves

Whilst breakdancing is a form of street dance, there is a huge selection of breakdance moves that you should try to master. Popular breakdancing moves that are commonly used include:

  • Air Flares
  • Applejack
  • Dizzy run
  • Footwork
  • Handglide
  • Headspins
  • Swipe
  • Toprock
  • Windmills

With many dance moves to learn, this makes breakdancing a great style to use in any routine. Not only can you learn these different dance moves, but it will often involve freestyle. This means you can freely create new moves on the spot!
