Street Dance Styles: Popping and Locking

Popping and locking seem like similar street dance moves however, they are two different dance styles which work brilliantly together. Both dance styles originated differently and have been combined since in many street dance performances.

Lil Beatz help all young children improve their street dance skills and learn all styles, including popping and locking. We offer street dance classes for all children aged 2-6 years old.
Learn More

What Is Popping?

Popping first came to light in the 1960s, starting with Boogaloo Sam in Fresno California. Whilst there are several different dance moves and origins involving popping, Boogaloo Sam invented “The Boogaloo” dance move. He then taught fellow members of his dance group, The Electric Boogaloos, how to use popping dance moves.

However, there are several other popping dance moves that can be used within street dance. This includes:

  • Animation
  • Dime Stop
  • Gliding
  • Isolation
  • Miming
  • Popping
  • Scarecrow
  • Snaking
  • Strobing
  • Strutting
  • The Robot
  • Ticking
  • Tutting

There are many different inventors when it comes to the original creation of different popping dance moves. Each dance move is completely different but uses elements of popping to create a fantastic dance style. For example, The Boogaloo is a fluid motion which creates the impression of having no bones, with the whole body being loose. Other moves such as gliding show you moving smoothly across the floor, so there is a lot of variation.

What Is Locking?

Locking originated slightly later than popping in the 1970s and was used as a specific style in Los Angeles. Its popularity quickly caught on and whilst the two began as their own unique dance styles, it was not long before they were combined together.

Locking was originally known as Campbellocking, having first been used by Don Campbell. Similar to popping, there are a range of different locking dance moves that can be incorporated into street dance. For example:

  • Alpha
  • Break Down
  • Floor Sweep
  • Funky Guitar
  • Jazz Split
  • Kick
  • Knee Drop
  • Leo Walk
  • Lock
  • Pacing
  • Scoo B Doo
  • Stop and Go
  • The Skeeter Rabbit
  • Up Lock
  • Whichaway
  • Wrist Twirl

Differences Between Popping and Locking

Although both popping and locking are popular within hip hop and commonly used together, they are different dance styles that can be mastered. Popping is forcing your body outwards, similar to an explosion within the body, whereas locking is contracting these body parts.

Both can be done at different intensity levels but locking can also be identified by its distinctive stops. There are many different street dance styles that are combined together within street dance routines. However, popping and locking complement each other to create a fantastic routine and dance style.

Combining Popping and Locking

As popping and locking was around before breakdancing, the two styles were very unique and used separately. During the breaking era, popping and locking began to combine to create funky and fun dance moves.

When used together, the contracting from locking and expansion from popping fit together effortlessly. By learning both dance styles simultaneously, you can master different street dance styles and improve your dancing skills!

Lil Beatz offer the perfect platform for all young dancers to develop their dancing skills and learn street dance styles.

Breakdancing

Breakdancing is possibly the most famous street dance style, originating in the 1970’s of New York City. Whether you are head spinning on the floor or performing flips, this is all part of the breakdance style. Breakdancing had a big influence after featuring in the film Flashdance in 1983. Since then, breakdancing has only grown bigger and better.

Floating

This street dance style isn’t exactly how its described as it may not teach you how to actually float. Floating aims to create a smooth and contained movement. Typically using the feet, this creates the illusion of someone floating across the ground. Whilst this dance style creates a particular dance move, it can be used throughout street dance. The three basic moves of floating are:

  • Gliding
  • Sliding
  • The Float

Each move creates the impression you are floating across the ground. Whilst this is a tricky skill to master, it can create one of the best dance moves.

Krumping

Krumping is one of the newest street dance styles, showing that new dance styles are always being created. It contains a lot of jabs, arm swings, chest pops and stomps and is a freestyle dance move that works flawlessly with breakdancing, hip-hop and b-boying. Los Angeles is one of many places where krumping is becoming a popular style. Krumping was originally created in the early 2000’s but has since evolved into an expressive and energetic dance style.

Find A Class

Turfing

Based on a method of storytelling, turfing is very improvisational and is a free-form dance style, with dance moves coming from a range of different traditions. Containing moves such as tutting, flexing and waving, turfing can create dance moves like no other, being extremely free-flowing, based on your own creativity!

Locking & Popping

Locking and popping are two different street dance styles, however, used together they create the perfect combination. Popping is more of an explosion of your body parts, which is why this combination is so good, combining a mix of an explosion and quick contraction. Locking is used to contract and tighten your body parts into a certain position.  You can always identify locking by distinctive stops as body parts move into different positions. This is where a fast movement is stopped, unlike popping. These two street dance styles create a fantastic motion in dance performances.

Find Out About Us

Robot

The robot is similar dance style to locking and popping, however, focuses on using only robotic dance moves. There have been many examples of how not to do the robot! However, it can be a good dance move to use when in contrast to a smooth flow of music, whether you are using stiff arms or head movements.

Jerkin’

Jerkin’ is another more recent hip-hop trend that has made its way into the street dance styles. Involving twitchy dance moves, jerkin’ is an unconventional dance move that involves in and out leg stretching.

Lil Beatz always want to incorporate a range of street dance styles into all dance performances. Our dance classes offer the perfect opportunity for children aged 2-6. No matter what current ability you have, we can develop your street dance skills and teach a range of styles. Join our classes today and get in touch with Lil Beatz.

Is Street Dance The Most Popular Style?

With a huge selection of dance styles, is street dance the most popular choice for young children? It has many benefits for young children and stands out among other, less exciting dance styles.

Lil Beatz, of course, think that street dance is the best and only option for young children! With this style being a fantastic hobby to get involved in, we look at why it is so popular.

Street Dance Growth

From George Sampson to Diversity winning Britain’s Got Talent and with films such as “Step Up” and “StreetDance”, street dance has grown in the public eye. Influencing children all over the world, it has grown in popularity over the last decade. Being an energetic and expressive dance style, it is very different to other dance styles that young children take part in.

With choreography being very mixed and improvised, it creates a fantastic effect that isn’t achieved with other dancers. This gives all young children the chance to be creative themselves, whilst taking part in an exciting and enjoyable dance style.

Find A Class

Popular Dance Styles

There are a number of popular dance styles and whilst they are great hobbies for children, they do not offer the same creativity and intense exercise that street dance does. Some of the most popular dance styles include:

  • Ballet
  • Contemporary
  • Jazz
  • Street
  • Tap

Street dance can help all young children stay fit and strengthen their muscles and bones from a young age. Whilst this may not seem like a big issue, it is important for young children to regularly exercise. This gives you a fantastic opportunity  and allows children to be involved more than other dance styles. With there being a range of dance types, all ages can find their strengths. An example of the dance types that could be involved include:

  • Animation
  • Breakdancing
  • Floating
  • Jerking
  • Krumping
  • Locking & Popping

With many children still choosing to learn dances such as tap and ballet, we simply cannot understand it! Street offers a variety of movements and helps all children develop a selection of dance skills. There is always a dance style that you can learn and enjoy, with street dance providing the perfect platform from a young age.
