Why Is Dance So Important?

Lil Top Rockers - Dance Classes

Dance is much more than just learning a routine and from a young age, it is an important activity for children to be immersed in. Not only are there many benefits of dance for children but this is part of a lifestyle and culture that anyone can get involved in.

Lil Beatz offer street dance classes for children aged between 2-6 years old. Our classes are the perfect opportunity for young children to stay active and enjoy dance!

Self Expression

Dance is perhaps the best method of self-expression. Whilst every dance style has its own unique take, street dance allows every child to be self-expressive and completely improvise in many situations. There are many different types of street dance, such as breakdancing, allowing all children to find a dance style they love and create their own moves and routines.

Dance is also another form of art, which appeals to many different people, whether you are watching dance or getting involved in it yourself. Street dance can be one of the more positive dance styles, with an explosive and energetic style to make it very enjoyable for all children getting involved. Although not everyone will love dance, it is important to give children this opportunity of self-expression, allowing them to use their own imagination.

Community & Culture

Dance comes from many different cultures, depending on the dance style that you want to join in with. Not only does this give children a good education into different cultures and where dances originated from, it will bring you into a community who share the same passion for dance and wanting to learn different dance routines.

Being part of a community from a young age can inspire a lot of confidence into children, helping them making friends and learning other people’s backgrounds, with the shared interest and hobby of loving dance. With age groups from 2-6, our dance classes can help children make friends before nursery and school, improving their confidence with interaction from other kids.

Entertainment

In a world where everyone seems glued to their phones and TV screens, dance provides a nice break and a different source of entertainment. Whether you are a parent who loves watching their child dance or the child learning routines and showcasing your dancing skills, it provides entertainment for all and variation from scrolling on Facebook or watching YouTube videos.

Every child should have a hobby and dance is one of the best to be involved in. Entertainment doesn’t just come from dance either. Being involved with other children will help all kids make friends so they are always having fun and enjoying their street dance classes.

Exercise & Staying Active

Problems with obesity and diabetes can start from a young age, demonstrating why it is so important for children to exercise and stay active. Although there are several different ways of doing this, dance is effective to help all children stay fit.

This will set you up for later life and give you the best opportunity to maintain fitness and avoid problems with your heart, obesity, diabetes and other issues that could occur. Street dance is a very active dance style and will only improve fitness. By regularly dancing, you can ease any worries and keep your body in great condition from a young age.

Street Dance Styles: Popping and Locking

Popping and locking seem like similar street dance moves however, they are two different dance styles which work brilliantly together. Both dance styles originated differently and have been combined since in many street dance performances.

Lil Beatz help all young children improve their street dance skills and learn all styles, including popping and locking. We offer street dance classes for all children aged 2-6 years old.
Learn More

What Is Popping?

Popping first came to light in the 1960s, starting with Boogaloo Sam in Fresno California. Whilst there are several different dance moves and origins involving popping, Boogaloo Sam invented “The Boogaloo” dance move. He then taught fellow members of his dance group, The Electric Boogaloos, how to use popping dance moves.

However, there are several other popping dance moves that can be used within street dance. This includes:

  • Animation
  • Dime Stop
  • Gliding
  • Isolation
  • Miming
  • Popping
  • Scarecrow
  • Snaking
  • Strobing
  • Strutting
  • The Robot
  • Ticking
  • Tutting

There are many different inventors when it comes to the original creation of different popping dance moves. Each dance move is completely different but uses elements of popping to create a fantastic dance style. For example, The Boogaloo is a fluid motion which creates the impression of having no bones, with the whole body being loose. Other moves such as gliding show you moving smoothly across the floor, so there is a lot of variation.

What Is Locking?

Locking originated slightly later than popping in the 1970s and was used as a specific style in Los Angeles. Its popularity quickly caught on and whilst the two began as their own unique dance styles, it was not long before they were combined together.

Locking was originally known as Campbellocking, having first been used by Don Campbell. Similar to popping, there are a range of different locking dance moves that can be incorporated into street dance. For example:

  • Alpha
  • Break Down
  • Floor Sweep
  • Funky Guitar
  • Jazz Split
  • Kick
  • Knee Drop
  • Leo Walk
  • Lock
  • Pacing
  • Scoo B Doo
  • Stop and Go
  • The Skeeter Rabbit
  • Up Lock
  • Whichaway
  • Wrist Twirl

Differences Between Popping and Locking

Although both popping and locking are popular within hip hop and commonly used together, they are different dance styles that can be mastered. Popping is forcing your body outwards, similar to an explosion within the body, whereas locking is contracting these body parts.

Both can be done at different intensity levels but locking can also be identified by its distinctive stops. There are many different street dance styles that are combined together within street dance routines. However, popping and locking complement each other to create a fantastic routine and dance style.

Combining Popping and Locking

As popping and locking was around before breakdancing, the two styles were very unique and used separately. During the breaking era, popping and locking began to combine to create funky and fun dance moves.

When used together, the contracting from locking and expansion from popping fit together effortlessly. By learning both dance styles simultaneously, you can master different street dance styles and improve your dancing skills!

Watching Dance Videos

One of the best ways to improve your current skills as a street dancer is by watching other dance videos. Dance videos are great to show you the best dancers from around the world, as well as teaching you how to do specific street dance moves.

Whether dance videos are old or new, they could give you the inspiration to create your own moves and routines. As street dance is varied and there are a range of dance styles, dance videos and tutorials can help you with all aspects of your street dancing, even from a young age.

Stretching & Improving Posture

Even when you’re young, stretching and having a good posture will always help with your street dancing. By regularly stretching, you keep your body fresh and make sure you are ready to complete flexible dance moves and many street dance styles!

With a good posture, this will also help when it comes to perfecting certain dance moves. Whilst our dance routines are not too complex for younger ages, you should stay active so your body is ready for all activities.

Enjoy Yourself

If you are not enjoying your street dance classes, this makes it very difficult to improve your dance skills. To become the best possible street dancer you can, you must always enjoy yourself whilst practising street dance at home or coming to our street dance lessons.

From a young age, finding the perfect hobby is essential. It is never too late to try something new and street dance could just be the suitable solution. If your heart is not fully committed to street dance, it will be difficult to enjoy and harder to improve.

Keep Practicing

When our street dance classes end, your street dancing should continue. Just because you are not in one of our classes does not mean you can’t practice street dance and improve your skills. Becoming an amazing street dancer means practising street dance wherever you can!

The more you practice, the better you will get. Whether this is individual moves, practising a full routine or learning new dance moves and styles online, this will all contribute to becoming the best possible street dancer.

Performing

Perhaps most importantly, becoming a great street dancer means performing. From a young age, performing will give you a massive confidence boost and help build your poise on a bigger stage. Performing can be nerve-wracking at any age but the best way to overcome this fear is to continue performing, doing something you enjoy.

With our street dance classes, we create a number of routines with all different age groups.  This allows us to help all young children begin performing at a young age. As your confidence continues to build, this sets you up perfectly for the future both in and out of dance.

Can Breakdancing Take You To The Olympics?

Lil Beatz Dancing

If you love street dance and have an Olympic dream, this is now a realistic possibility. Breakdancing, a form of street dance, has taken another step towards being an Olympic sport, beginning at the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.

Lil Beatz offer dance classes in Blackpool, Southport and Wythenshawe to develop the street dancing and breakdancing skills of the next generation. With our classes, the Olympics could become a huge dream for many young dancers.

What Is Breakdancing?

Breakdancing, which is also known a b-boying or b-girling, is a form of street dance. Breakdancing is the most athletic style of street dance and it uses many variations of dance, whilst consistently using toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes. There are many other dance moves that can be incorporated into breakdancing, making it one of the best and most popular dance styles. Other popular breakdance moves include:

  • Air Flares
  • Applejack
  • Dizzy run
  • Footwork
  • Handglide
  • Head Spins
  • Swipe
  • Windmills

This makes breakdancing extremely versatile and a popular option for all young dancers.

Breakdancing has increased massively in popularity after originating in New York during the 1970s. More recently, several films have been created based on the topic of street dance and breakdancing, along with creating Britain’s Got Talent winners such as George Sampson.

A Spot At The Olympics

Breakdancing or “breaking”, has moved a step closer to being in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Along with surfing, climbing and skateboarding, breakdancing was proposed in February and has now been approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members.

In an attempt to make the Olympics more gender-balanced, younger and urban, breakdancing certainly achieves this. As a fantastic addition to the Olympics, it means that even from a young age, you can be preparing for the ultimate achievement of performing at the Olympic Games. By generating engagement among young people, more and more children can get involved in street dance knowing it could take them towards a global event.

How Olympic Breakdancing Works

Whilst it is still in its infancy, the street dance competition would have 16 male and female athletes each participating in the event. Breakdancing will make its debut in 2024 and should encourage a brand new generation of young children to get involved in street dancing, stay active, stay fit and they could also achieve the dream of the Olympic Games.

Why Lil Beatz Want To Help

Lil Beatz has the goal to make sure all young children stay fit and active. Obesity can be a problem from a young age and can lead to problems later on in life. Dancing is one of the best ways to avoid obesity and take part in a fun and exciting sport. As Lil Beatz continue to expand from Blackpool to Wythenshawe, we want to help as many young children as possible. With our street dance classes, we can develop your skills in all types of dance styles, regardless of the experience or talent you have. How To Choose The Right Dance School

Dance Studio

It is important to have a dance studio you can trust when encouraging your children to begin dance. If you are not comfortable with dance teachers or other children at the class, it makes it very difficult for your child to enjoy street dance.

Lil Beatz offer different classes for children aged 2-6. We want to make sure all parents are comfortable with our dance studio, encouraging your children as much as possible.

Trusting Staff

Possibly the most important factor in choosing the right dance studio is the staff working there. Whether you are attending our classes in Blackpool, Southport or Wythenshawe, you can be assured of personal and caring dance instructors. At Lil Beatz, our dance teachers are all DBS checked, first aid qualified and fully insured. This includes:

  • Miss Zoe
  • Miss Shana
  • Miss Vicci
  • & many more

Now with five different dance teachers across our 4 franchise dance studios, you can be assured of dependable teachers for all street dance classes. Our dance teachers will also work with all children individually and in a group to improve their skills.

We are happy for parents to stay with us during any sessions, placing confidence in both you and your child. Once your child has a bit more confidence and you have reassurance, you are welcome to drop them off and pick them up after class.

Choosing Dance Styles

Another major aspect of your dance studio is considering the dance style your children would like to learn. Street dance is a creative and unique style that not enough young children get involved in. Whilst you could choose more traditional dances such as tap and ballet, street dance is one of the most enjoyable options for kids.

At our dance classes, we also offer many different interactive activities in addition to dance routines. This gives children a great opportunity to make friends whilst staying fit and getting into the groove of street dance. Street dance allows children to freestyle and take the initiative, unlike other dances. With many different street dance move, fantastic routines can be created with the right dance teachers.

If you are unsure about what dance class could be best for your child, street dance should be your first option. With Lil Beatz offering a 3-week trial, this gives you the opportunity to experience street dance and make sure you choose the right dance studio for your child.

Dance Class Sizes

To help your child develop dance skills as much as possible, finding a dance studio with the right balance in their dance class size is essential. Too small and it can be difficult to interact and create a great dance routine. Too large and developing dance skills becomes very difficult without the right support.

Thankfully, Lil Beatz have four different dance studios is Blackpool North, Blackpool South, Southport and Wythenshawe. In addition to this, we have multiple classes every week to adjust for all age groups. We have dance classes for ages 2-3, 3-4 and 4-6. This allows us to help children with all different dance abilities and experience improve their dancing skills.

How Does The School Help?

Local dance studios are obviously more convenient and this can be very helpful for most parents. As Lil Beatz now has 4 different dance studios across the North West, we are making ourselves available for all children.

If your child is interested in street dance classes, Lil Beatz can always meet your needs. Not only does our dance studio make it easy for parents but our street dance classes can help improve fitness, creativity and friendships from a young age.

Can Street Dance Help With Mental Health?

Street Dance Mental Health

Whilst dance can obviously help with a range of fitness issues, could it also affect your mental health? In a report by the BBC, Chad Taylor discusses how mental health cannot just be helped through street dance but also portrayed throughout a dance.

Lil Beatz offer street dance classes for all young children ages 2-6 years old. Our classes should always help children make friendships and get creative!

How Can Street Dance Help?

Lil Beatz believes street dance can help young children break many barriers and build relationships. Chad Taylor, who has suffered from mental health, used dance to portray his emotions during difficult times.

This just demonstrates that through the creativity of street dance, people of all ages can express themselves and the dance that they love. Whether you choose this to express mental health or use it to voice your enjoyment and love for dance, it can help with all issues.

Improving Confidence

Many children are confident with all tasks that take them on in early life. However, some children can lack confidence and may not find a hobby they love to take part in. Street dance can be a great option for all children to build their self-belief and join the Lil Beatz community. We welcome all new dancers regardless of talent and experience and help you develop your skills!

We already have many children at our Lil Beatz dance classes. This gives your child the opportunity to build friendships with children of the same age and similar interests. As our classes age from 2-6, this could help children before they begin toddlers and playgroups or before starting primary school. Having friends when going into primary school is fantastic for all young children and our classes should remove any barriers.

As dance can also help with issues such as obesity, it is great to keep young children in shape. Putting on weight from a young age could lead to problems down the line and street dance counteracts this.

Reduce Stress & Anxiety

Unlike other dance styles, street dance really allows you to express yourself and get creative with dance routines. By working with others within our routines, this can reduce the anxiety of young children who struggle to make friends.

In dance classes, you are continuously working with children our age. We also have many fun activities to make sure children are enjoying every aspect of dance. Physical movement is also a massive stress reliever and is associated with being more social and connected with others. This makes it the perfect opportunity for all young children to get involved and meet new friends.
